NEWS FROM CPANDA

The Cultural Policy & the Arts National Data Archive, is an interactive digital archive of data on the arts and cultural policy in the U.S. available for research and statistical analysis, with data on artists, arts and cultural organizations, audiences, and support for arts and culture.

CPANDA's staff are busily preparing a new, vibrant, easy-to-use CPANDA Web Site. Releases of data sets and quick facts are temporarily on hold pending the release of the redesigned site.

CPANDA’s new features, as well as the usual data set and quick fact announcements can be found at www.cpanda.org. You can subscribe to CPANDA E-News, an electronic newsletter that will notify you when new data sets are available on the CPANDA website and www.cpanda.org/news/newsletter.html

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS' E-ADVOCACY CENTER CONTINUES TO BE A SUCCESS

Americans for the Arts' E-Advocacy Center continues to be a key component of our legislative successes. Since Arts Advocacy Day on March 14, 2005, our online advocates have sent more than 14,000 messages to Members of Congress in all 50 states on issues ranging from the Congressional Arts Caucus floor amendment vote to urging Senators to join the new Senate Cultural Caucus. In addition, we continue to grow our e-advocacy activist list-now over 42,000-with timely action alerts and updates.

2005 CRAFT RESEARCH FUND GRANTS ANNOUNCED

The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design was awarded $95,000 for Craft Research Fund Projects and Graduate Research for critical writing on studio craft and craft research in early April. This is the first year of a three-year pilot granting program to expand scholarly research on American studio craft. A panel of four peer reviewers evaluated the 57 applications for Project Grants and the 12 applications for Graduate Research, awarding six Projects Grants totaling $75,000 and four Graduate Research grants of $5,000 each. The Craft Research Fund was created to foster and expand scholarly research on studio craft of artists working in the United States. www.craftcreativitydesign.org

TOOLS TO IMPROVE CULTURAL TOURISM

Arts Marketing Institute Fellow Felicia Shaw has created a web primer on how communities can begin developing their cultural heritage assets to increase tourism. It has handy features such as tools to identify a community's cultural assets; how to measure readiness to launch a cultural tourism campaign; tips on how to shape a story that will capture visitors' imaginations; and how to get organized, find partners, build infrastructure, and market and promote your brand identity to finally welcome new visitors. CLASSICS FOR KIDS FOUNDATION GRANTS PROGRAM 2005-2006

The Classics for Kids Foundation is currently accepting grant applications from nonprofit music programs serving youth grades 3-12 for matching grants for stringed instruments that are beautiful, sound terrific, and are easy for children to play; world-class mentoring by renowned cellist, Michael Reynolds. Details about Classics for Kids Foundation, grant criteria, and applications are available online. Grants are open to nonprofit organizations or to private studios with a nonprofit partner. THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT ARTISTS 2005 ARTIST CONFERENCE

The National Association of Independent Artists (NAIA) announces its 2005 Artist Conference, The Creative Life: Roadmapping Your Success as an Art Show Artist. The conference will be held at the Maumee Bay Lodge, outside Toledo, OH. This conference is the only one of its kind that focuses directly on artists who participate in art shows, fairs, and festivals, and is open to all artists and show directors. 2005 NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF STATE ARTS AGENCIES ANNUAL MEETING

The 2005 National Assembly of Arts Agencies annual meeting, "Shaping Cultural Landscapes," will be held in Boise, Idaho, and will be hosted by the Idaho Commission on the Arts. "Shaping Cultural Landscapes" will bring together state arts agency staff, volunteer leaders, and colleagues to explore the application of change management in the public sector; to examine innovative approaches to the stewardship of cultural resources; and to develop communications tactics that help opinion leaders recognize and support our work. THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN CULTURES PRESENTS OPEN DIALOGUE X
