On the National Front: House and Senate Bills Increase Arts Funding
The week of June 24, 2002, House and Senate appropriations panels approved funding increases in 2003 for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee on June 25 passed legislation raising NEA spending from the current level of $115.2 million to $116.5 million for rent and salary increases, as requested in the president’s budget. On June 27, the Senate Appropriations Committee bettered the House bill by adding $3.25 million to the endowment, putting the NEA at $119 million in 2003. The additional NEA spending in the Senate’s bill includes $2 million designated for the Challenge America program, which has gained popular support from Congress for its emphasis on arts education and broadening access to the arts.

On the National Front: The Economic Impact of the Arts: $134 billion in 2000
Americans for the Arts (AFTA) released the findings from their study Arts & Economic Prosperity: The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts Organizations and Their Audiences. This research project reveals that America’s nonprofit arts industry generated $134 billion in economic activity during 2000, including $53.2 billion in spending by nonprofit arts organizations and $80.8 billion in event-related spending by arts audiences.
