Start News Update: 230 Kentucky Leaders Convene in Louisville
DeWitt Wallace Reader's Digest-Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund logoThe Kentucky Arts Council has selected sixty-one arts organization teams of arts administrators and board members to receive intensive training in building cultural participation in the state. The two-day Kentucky Institute for Arts Participation on September 5-6, 2002, at the Galt House in Louisville is a component of Kentucky’s START (State Arts Partnership for Cultural Participation) initiative funded by the Wallace-Reader’s Digest Funds. Organizations receiving operational support funding from the Arts Council were invited to apply and selection was based on a competitive application process with the expectation that organizations will commit to the process of increasing participation. Increased participation can lead to stronger organizational capacity, broader community involvement, more diversified audiences and greater success in raising funds.

Kentucky Arts Council staff and special presenters Rory McPherson and Ken Fischer will work with organizations in a variety of practices that have proven successful in other parts of the country. Rory McPherson is the program assistant with Wallace Reader’s Digest Funds, New York, NY and Ken Fischer is executive director of the highly successful University Musical Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Arts Council has also partnered with 14 Kentucky performing arts centers in the START initiative and they will be attending as advanced learners. Following the completion of the two-day training, attending organizations will be able to apply for a special non-matching grant to implement participation-building strategies.
