Ken vonRoenn, Jr. |
Noted as One of Top 25 People Making a Difference in the Arts Kenneth F. von Roenn, Jr., President of Architectural Glass Art, Inc. and co-founder of Glassworks in Louisville, has been named as one of the "Top 25 People Making a Difference in the Arts in the Midwest" by dialogue Magazine.
vonRoenn began his career in glass in 1970 at Louisville Art Glass, which was then owned by his father-in-law. In 1991, he bought the Louisville Art Glass Studio and renamed it Architectural Glass Art, Inc. He expanded and reorganized the company redirecting its focus on new roles for glass in architecture. He serves as head designer and president, managing a staff of twenty-five.
In the late 90's, vonRoenn's desire to expand the studio led to his search for a new space. During this period, he joined with a group of developers and investors interested in the revitalization of downtown Louisville as well as our region's firm commitment to the arts. The group, guided by vonRoenn's vision of a multipurpose glass facility, formulated a concept for what is now known as Glassworks. From the original idea of a new home for Architectural Glass Art, vonRoenn and his partners have created a space for many glass artists to work and sell their art. vonRoenn has stated that "It is our goal to expand the public's awareness of the magic, mystery, and beauty of glass as well as to cultivate and nurture the work of glass artists."

The Kentucky Department of Travel has launched a new Web-based Calendar of Events that can benefit arts presenters, festivals, public and commercial galleries, craft studios and retail venues. The Arts Council is encouraging all arts organizations to use this free and easy-to-use service to publicize their events and spaces. "The Kentucky Calendar of Events has proven itself as a successful marketing tool, the challenge now is to be sure that arts organizations take advantage of the opportunity and populate the database driven Web site," says Arts Council Public Information Officer Ed Lawrence.
The extranet site is easy to use and only takes a few minutes to make entries. Before you start, it might be helpful to navigate through the Calendar of Events site to get an understanding of how it is organized from the perspective of the tourist or user. Customers that go the Arts Council's Web site looking for arts activities can also access the calendar directly from a button located at the bottom of the front page.
How to Begin
To access the "backdoor" of the extranet (industry portal), go to www.kytourism.com/industry.
You will see a navigational bar on the left. Scroll down and click on
Extranet. This takes you to the log-in page. You must initially register
by entering your user name and establishing your own password. This is
your key to making entries.
For step-by-step instructions, look above the login dropdown boxes, for a line in blue that says "EXTRANET Training Manual." Click on this for step-by-step instructions on making entries as an attraction or an event or both. It's a good idea to make a printout of the Extranet Resource Manual for easy reference while making entries.
Once your entries are made they go to a pending file. Entries are usually approved and launched within twenty-four hours. You are responsible for providing accurate information, and once you start entering information you cannot go back to make corrections. Editing can be done once the listing is posted, if you are the originator of the listing. Once you have completed your listing, be sure to click FINISHED.
Taking advantage of this is really easy but it takes a commitment on the part of the organization and a little planning to ensure that entries are done as routinely as press releases or any other regular marketing activity.
NEED HELP? Don't be shy. There are a number of resources to help get you started. You can call your local tourism entity for information on extranet training sessions. If you get stuck while making entries you can contact the Webmaster Mary Boden at (502) 564-4930. If you just need someone to talk you through it or get you started, call the Arts Council's friendly Public Information Officer Ed Lawrence at (888) 833-2787 ext. 4803.
