Danville Educator Mardi Montgomery to Fill Deputy Cabinet Position

Frankfort, KY: Governor Ernie Fletcher announced today Danville educator Mardi Montgomery as Deputy Secretary of Education. Montgomery previously worked as the Coordinator of the Danville Kids University and as an English teacher at Boyle County High School. Montgomery was named Kentucky Teacher of the Year in 2000 by the Kentucky Department of Education.

"I am honored and excited to be named to this important position," said Mardi Montgomery. "I am proud to represent teachers from across Kentucky, and I believe my appointment reflects the respect Governor Fletcher has for the work of educators and his concern for the education and well-being of Kentuckians throughout the Commonwealth.

Mardi Montgomery graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1978 and from Centre College in 1993 with a B.A. in English and Secondary Education. From there, she went on to gain her Masters of Arts in Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1997 and did advanced placement studies through Duke University. Montgomery also gained her Gifted Education Certificate (K-12) from Georgetown College and her Rank I Administration and Instructional Leadership in 2003.

Among the many awards Mardi Montgomery has won over the past five years are the Ashland Teacher Achievement Award 2000, Outstanding Educator 2000 given by the AEL Regional Education Laboratory, the Civic Star Award given by the American Association of School Administrators, Boyle County High School Teacher of the Year 2000, and Ashland Oil's Golden Apple Achiever Award for excellence in teaching.

"Mardi will be a tremendous asset to the Education Cabinet," stated Governor Fletcher. "I know that the most important factor in a child's education is the quality of the teacher in the classroom, and I am proud to bring in an outstanding teacher who I know will work hard to improve education in Kentucky for every person in our great Commonwealth."
