Educator Mardi Montgomery to Fill Deputy Cabinet Position

Governor Ernie Fletcher announced today Danville
educator Mardi Montgomery as Deputy Secretary of Education.
Montgomery previously
worked as the Coordinator of the Danville
Kids University
and as an English teacher at Boyle
County High
School. Montgomery
was named Kentucky Teacher of the Year in 2000 by the Kentucky
Department of Education.
"I
am honored and excited to be named to this important position,"
said Mardi Montgomery. "I am proud to represent teachers
from across Kentucky,
and I believe my appointment reflects the respect Governor
Fletcher has for the work of educators and his concern for
the education and well-being of Kentuckians throughout the
Commonwealth.
Mardi Montgomery graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1978 and from Centre College in 1993 with a B.A. in English and Secondary Education. From there, she went on to gain her Masters of Arts in Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1997 and did advanced placement studies through Duke University. Montgomery also gained her Gifted Education Certificate (K-12) from Georgetown College and her Rank I Administration and Instructional Leadership in 2003.
Among the many awards Mardi Montgomery has won over
the past five years are the Ashland Teacher Achievement
Award 2000, Outstanding Educator 2000
given by the
AEL Regional Education Laboratory, the Civic Star Award
given by the American Association of School Administrators,
Boyle County High School Teacher of the Year 2000, and Ashland
Oil's Golden Apple Achiever Award for excellence in teaching.
"Mardi will be a tremendous asset to the Education
Cabinet," stated Governor Fletcher. "I know that
the most important factor in a child's education is the
quality of the teacher in the classroom, and I am proud
to bring in an outstanding teacher who I know will work
hard to improve education in Kentucky
for every person in our great Commonwealth."
