Mrs. Fletcher encourages the students to reach their goal of reading 100 million words by the end of the school year

Frankfort, KY:   First Lady Glenna Fletcher visited Elkhorn Elementary School in Franklin County today to encourage students to get excited about reading.  The First Lady read to four kindergarten classes and shared her passion about literacy.

"I am dedicated to helping teachers and parents instill a love of reading in every school-age child," stated Mrs. Fletcher.  "As part of my role in the "Read to Achieve" legislation, I will be traveling around the state, reading to children and talking about the importance of literacy.  I want to congratulate educators at Elkhorn Elementary School for setting a goal for their students to read 100 million words this school year."

Elkhorn Elementary Principal Mark Thomas says the children are half-way to that goal; having read 57 million words since the beginning of the school year.

"We're very excited about having the First Lady come to visit us," says Principal Thomas.  "It sends an important message to our students when a state leader takes time from a busy schedule to come read to children.  It shows how committed Mrs. Fletcher is to reading and helping students become successful."

The school designated February as "I Love to Read Month" as a way to remind the students of the goal and generate new enthusiasm about reading.
