Mrs. Fletcher shares a favorite book, thoughts on reading to third and fifth graders

Frankfort, KY: First Lady Glenna Fletcher traveled from Frankfort to Jefferson County this morning to celebrate "Read With a Child Day" at Gutermuth Elementary School.

Mrs. Fletcher brought some of her favorite childhood books to share with third and fifth grade classes.  She also talked to the students about her passion for literacy.

"If I can spark an interest and a love for reading in one student, then I will have succeeded in making a difference," stated Mrs. Fletcher. "Visiting with students, sharing a book with them, and getting them excited about reading is part of my overall plan to boost the literacy among all students in Kentucky."

The First Lady is also passionate about "Read to Achieve," Governor Fletcher's literacy initiative which has become legislation sponsored by Senator Dan Kelly and supported by many other lawmakers.

"As a spokeswoman for Read to Achieve, I plan on traveling around the state, visiting schools and encouraging them to read, as well as talking with parents about the importance of literacy," stated Mrs. Fletcher.

Gutermuth Elementary School Principal Donna Wiseman says reading is the school's main focus and the cornerstone of every child's education.

"Our efforts concentrate on student achievement by breaking down barriers that block student success," Wiseman said.  "We appreciate Mrs. Fletcher's support of literacy and believe that this emphasis will be an asset to all Kentucky students."
