Governor Ernie Fletcher declares state of emergency
Governor, General Storm tour storm-damaged areas
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Following a tour of the storm-damaged communities of Benton and Madisonville early Wednesday morning, Governor Ernie Fletcher has issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The order comes after communities were struck by high winds and tornados Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Governor Fletcher, along with Adjutant General Donald C. Storm, spoke this morning with a number of families who suffered damage to their homes during the storm. While there, they heard stories from many individuals who were sifting through their damaged belongings.
"It is difficult to put into words the devastation we saw in these communities this morning," said Governor Fletcher. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who are suffering as a result of this storm. Rest assured we will do everything we can to assist in this time of difficulty."
Governor Fletcher has directed the Kentucky National Guard to send troops to the area to assist state and local law enforcement in patrolling the area.
State highway crews worked throughout the night and into Wednesday morning to clear debris off state highways. After state roads were cleared, state highway workers assisted local officials in other areas of need, including manning road blocks and clearing debris from city and county roads.
