Governor Fletcher, Bipartisan Leaders Welcome Support of Greater Louisville, Inc.
Frankfort, KY: With yet another group displaying their support for Governor Ernie Fletcher's bipartisan, bicameral tax modernization proposal, Greater Louisville Inc. announces its support for the JOBS for Kentucky plan. Greater Louisville Inc. is the metro chamber of commerce and economic development agency that represents more than 2,200 businesses in the Louisville Metropolitan area.
"Our current tax system is one that was built upon a manufacturing and agrarian economy and is an outdated system that simply does not reflect today's knowledge-based economy. Kentucky has struggled to keep up with its neighbors in attracting knowledge-based companies and the talent that fuels those businesses. Greater Louisville Inc. believes Governor Fletcher's plan is a strong first step toward correcting these inadequacies, and we thank him for taking the initiative to address the issue,” stated GLI President and CEO Steve Higdon.
In September 1997, Greater Louisville Inc. was formed through the merger of the Greater Louisville Economic Development Partnership, which was the primary business attraction agency for the Greater Louisville region, and the Louisville Area Chamber of Commerce. In early 1998, GLI also assumed some of the economic development activities that had been carried out by the city and county - specifically the Louisville/ Jefferson County Office for Economic Development's outreach program, business retention and expansion responsibilities.
"Metro Louisville is a vital economic engine for this Commonwealth, and I appreciate the support of Louisville's business leaders and Greater Louisville Inc.,” stated Governor Fletcher. "For many years, this organization has urged state leaders to take up the issue of tax modernization as a critical part of making Louisville and the entire state more competitive in its economic development efforts. I look forward to working with GLI and its members to implement JOBS for Kentucky, which will move this Commonwealth forward and provide greater opportunities for Kentuckians.”
