ANNA NELSON SHELBY MAGOFFIN (1818-1880, 21st First Lady) was the granddaughter of Susannah and Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky. Anna married Beriah Magoffin in 1840. He was elected governor in 1859, during a period when the controversy over slavery had to be resolved. The governor was pro-Southern, but the legislature was pro-Union. Rendered powerless, Magoffin agreed to resign in 1861 with the stipulation that he be allowed to select his successor. The Magoffins returned to their Harrodsburg home.
Mrs. C.W. Hildenbrandt, Lexington, made this dress. The Harrodsburg Woman’s Club was the sponsor.
