23 Sworn Officers with the Kentucky State Police have given their lives in the line of duty.

We honor this dedication to duty here.  It can be truly said that each has honored their commitment to serve and protect, for which they paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of service above self.

Trooper William E. Tevis, Post 11, London, shot while making an arrest, Laurel County.

Trooper Elmer Mobley, Jr., Post 9, Pikeville, vehicle accident while en route to answer call for assistance, Pike County.

May 28, 1964


Trooper Cecil W. Uzzle, Post 9, Pikeville, vehicle accident en route for assistance, Pike County.

May 28, 1964


Trooper Delano G. Powell, Post 13, Hazard, shot while serving warrant, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

July 8, 1965


Trooper Mack E. Brady, Post 16, Henderson, vehicle accident while en route to answer call for assistance, Henderson County.

November 9, 1966


Trooper William H. Barrett, Post 3, Bowling Green, ambushed and shot, Warren County.
 

December 19, 1971


Trooper James W. McNeely, Headquarters, drowned while on flood rescue mission, Franklin County.

April 8, 1972


Trooper Walter O. Thurtell, Post 3, Bowling Green, vehicle accident while en route to answer call for assistance, Logan County.

September 29, 1972


Trooper Joe Ward, Jr., Post 2, Madisonville, struck by vehicle while working auto accident, Hopkins County.

 

April 23, 1973


Lt. William C. Smith, Post 3, Bowling Green, died as a result of gunshot wounds suffered on November 10, 1972, while attempting to arrest a murder suspect, Warren County.

April 26, 1973


Trooper John Hutchinson, Post 11, London, shot while attempting to effect an arrest, McCreary County.

June 4, 1975


Trooper Bobby McCoun, Post 9, Pikeville, gunshot, Pike County.


September 1, 1975


Trooper William F. Pickard, Post 4, Elizabethtown, shot while serving warrant, Larue County.

January 21, 1976


Lt. Willis Martin, Post 4, Elizabethtown, vehicle accident, Hardin County.

April 26, 1977


Trooper Clinton E. Cunningham, Post 12, Frankfort, ambushed and shot, Franklin County.

February 11, 1979


Trooper Edward R. Harris, Post 4, Elizabethtown, shot while making an arrest, Larue County

November 7, 1979


Trooper Jerome S. Clifton, Post 9, Pikeville, died as a result of gunshot wounds suffered on September 16, 1980, while attempting to arrest a shooting suspect, Pike County.

October 1, 1980


Detective Darrell V. Phelps, Post 3, Bowling Green, shot while investigating the illegal cultivation of marijuana, Edmonson County.
 

August 7, 1981

making a traffic stop,
Laurel County.
