congressional and some executive Branch resources printed by GPO.
- Government Servers lists

- Search.com (c/net) Contains search
engines for 250 search tools including some of those below:
- Alta Vista provides fast full-text searches, both
simple and advanced (Full Boolean), for over 21 million Web pages. Broad
searches in this search engine may result in too long a list to effectively
browse. It also provides a full-text index of more than 13,000 newsgroups.
- Excite provides full-text search for
about 1.5 million Web pages. The user can search by keyword or by 16 or more
menu categories and then sort the results by site. Excite's team of expert
journalists offer reviews of 55,000 sites.
- Deja News Research Service is advertised as the
"Premier Usenet Search Service" finding the topic you're interested in by a
weighted search criteria that sorts the information based on the number of
occurrences of the word for which you are looking.
- HotBot Search the entire Web with 54
million documents. HotBot provides graded non-menu oriented searches.
- The Internet Sleuth has a hierarchy
of subjects as well as elaborate search tools, including a search of other Web
Search Engines.
- Infoseek
has a heirarchy of subjects, a search engine called "Ultraseek," and a
personalized profile capability.
- Lycos Search provides simple keyword searches for
over 19 million Web pages or limits by categories in A2z search. The "Point"
service also provides a rating system (Content, Presentation, Experience) and
reviews for each site, and sorting of lists by the highest rated site first.
PC World magazine recently rated Lycos best of the top 11 Internet search
engines in both quality of information and relevancy of results.
- Magellan, in addition to the standard keyword
searching, allows the user to limit searches by a rating system and also lets
the user screen out sites that are only for mature audiences. The user can
also control the length of the description and the number of entries per page.
- Yahoo search The hierarchical nature of the menu
choices in this search engine provides an effective way to easily limit broad
searches.
- Yellow Pages facilitates subject access to Web sites
similar to the company's directory published in paper format.
- WWW Virtual Library is a
distributed subject catalogue. See Category
