Governor's Derby
Breakfast Invitations In the Mail
Frankfort, Ky. –Can it be Derby time already? Sure enough, the most exciting two minutes in sports is just around the corner -- May 4, to be exact.
For thousands of folks, it's not Derby Day unless it starts with the festivities at the Governor's Derby Breakfast. The annual event's colorful, souvenir invitations are now in the mail. (The invitation is strictly a keepsake; the breakfast remains open to all.)
There's one very important change in this year's breakfast. The location has switched from the Capitol grounds to historic downtown Frankfort. The focal point will be length of Broadway Street from Wilkinson Boulevard to High Street, including St. Clair Street. Two food tents, one located on the Old State Capitol grounds, the other at the old train station on Broadway, will serve visitors picnic-style. Four entertainment stages will be scattered throughout the area.
As with past breakfasts, artisans will display and sell their wares, this year along the length of St. Clair Street from Main to Broadway, and on the Old State Capitol grounds. Information tents, “Kids Korner,” souvenir photographs, as well as other exhibits will be set up on the Old State Capitol grounds. The Kentucky History Center and its new garden will be open and will host displays by many Kentucky Renaissance cities.
The change in locale came about because of construction in the Capitol area. But, as Gov. Paul Patton points out, downtown Frankfort provides an ideal setting to emphasize Kentucky's historic importance.
"I can't think of any other place in Kentucky that has more charm and historic flavor than downtown Frankfort," said Gov. Patton. "That's why Judi and I are so pleased to host the breakfast in the downtown area."
Guests are encouraged to park behind the CHR Building at 275 E. Main St. and use the free shuttle service running to and from the downtown area. The shuttle will run from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
After enjoying the sights and sounds of the downtown area, visitors might want to return to their cars and drive to the Capitol area, where a juried art exhibit will be held at the Executive Mansion from 9 a.m. to noon on Derby Day. Also, the Capitol building will be open for tours.
