PROTOCOL WHEN MEETING THE ROYAL FAMILY
Dress
The correct dress code for
the occasion is usually indicated on the invitation. Lounge suit = business suit.
With Black Tie/ Tuxedo a white shirt is preferable. Military uniform is usually informal for
daytime events (White Dress in summer).
Ladies may wear hats to afternoon events; the Princess Royal probably
will not. The events during the day on Saturday are informal.
Bowing and Curtseying
There is no need for people
who are not British subjects to bow or curtsey.
Shaking Hands; Conversation; Speaking First:
It is customary to wait for
the member of the Royal Family to extend a hand, initiate a topic of
conversation, etc, but there is no need to worry; just be yourself. The
Princess Royal is addressed as "Your Royal Highness" in the first
instance and thereafter as “Ma’am” (pronounced “Mam” to rhyme with “ham”, not
“Marm”).
Cameras, Autograph Books
It will not be possible to
bring your camera; photographs will only be allowed by a small number of accredited
press, or house photographers. Members
of the Royal Family do not give autographs. Absolutely no weapons are allowed.
Gifts/Flowers
Gifts/ flowers should not be
presented without clearing previously with the British officials co-ordinating
the event.
