Don’t forget the Kids: Lots of activities planned at the 2002 Derby Breakfast

FRANKFORT, KY - Be sure to bring the kids along to the Governor’s Derby Breakfast to see the antics of “Happy the Clown” and to ponder slight of hand tricks by magicians.  Kids also can sport fun figures painted by face painters.   All these activities and more will be at Kids Corner, located in the First Christian Church parking lot at the corner of Broadway and Ann Streets in downtown Frankfort.

“While the Derby Breakfast offers activities for ‘kids’ of all ages, I’m hopeful the children that join us on Saturday morning will enjoy the many wonderful sites and sounds created for their enjoyment,” said First Lady Judi Patton.

Children can have fun learning “rules of the road” as they ride tricycles through SAFETY CITY, a miniature model layout of buildings, roads, traffic signs and signals.  SAFETY CITY, targeted for children under the age of nine, is designed to give children a basic understanding of traffic safety laws.

The Kentucky Alive Biodiversity Bus, which focuses on the diversity of wildlife and their habitat across the state, will be parked nearby.  A mural showing Kentucky’s wildlife running, flying and swimming covers this former school bus.  Once on board the bus, visitors can watch a video on wildlife restoration including deer and elk; look at a variety of life-like mounted animals; see different regions of Kentucky and the wildlife found in each area; and learn how wetlands support a variety of animals and plants.  Visitors can get a “birds-eye” view of a real bird of prey and a live snake - handled by Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife staff.
