FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 17, 2003) – The Governor’s Derby Day Celebration in downtown Frankfort on May 3 will have plenty of free, fun activities for kids. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Everyone
recognizes those little marshmallow chickens called Peeps.
The Peeps Fun Bus, a brightly colored vehicle if ever there was one, will
park in the First Christian Church parking lot at Broadway and Ann Streets. A
variety of games and activities will greet kids there and nearby a Kids Korner
will feature face painting.
Across
Broadway at the Kentucky History Center, future drivers will learn the rules of
the road by steering their tricycles around at the popular Safety City exhibit.
Across Ann Street in the Old Train Depot parking lot the Fish and
Wildlife Resources exhibit will feature a display of birds of prey, native
plants and slithery ssssssnakes—all alive and well.
Staff will be on hand to answer questions about Kentucky’s wild things.
Youngsters
can meet up with history. Costumed
characters will circulate throughout the day, including Abe and Mary Todd
Lincoln.
Another
highlight for kids will be at the Kentucky Folklife Program tent on the Old
Capitol grounds. There, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., children will get a chance to
make Derby hats—a universal symbol of Derby Day. At 1 p.m., the kids will show
off there handiwork in a Derby parade to the nearby entertainment stage.
And
throughout the day, entertainers and musicians will perform on four stages
scattered throughout the downtown area.
The Frankfort/Franklin County Tourist and Convention Commission will
provide a continental-style breakfast during the celebration hours.
All in all, the Governor’s Derby Day Celebration promises to offer plenty of fun for youngsters of all ages.
