Jefferson Community College Professor Completes KCTCS Board of Regents
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 26, 1997) - Community college faculty members from across the state have elected a psychology professor at Jefferson Community College as their representative on the Board of Regents of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).
Dr. Jack Hanel will serve a three-year term on the board, which by next July 1 will take over management of 13 of the 14 community colleges now run by the University of Kentucky and the 25 postsecondary technical schools that now are part of the state Cabinet for Workforce Development.
Hanel received his bachelor's degree from Houghton College, his master's degree from Western Kentucky University and his Ph.D. from Indiana State University; all were in the field of psychology. He has taught at Jefferson Community College's Southwest Campus since 1977. Hanel has a private practice in psychology and was editor of "The Kentucky Psychologist."
Hanel becomes the 14th and final person chosen to serve on the board. Five others were elected by the schools: the technical education faculty regent is Bobby McCool of Mayo Regional Technology Center in Paintsville; the community college student regent is Charles O'Neal of Madisonville Community College; the technical school student regent is Donna Davis of Somerset Regional Technology Center; the technical education staff regent is Mark Powell of Bowling Green Regional Technology Center; and the community college staff regent is Cindy Fiorella of Owensboro Community College.
Gov. Paul Patton in July appointed the eight citizen members of the KCTCS Board of Regents. They are Martha Johnson of Ashland; Marvin Russow of Louisville; John Banks of Hopkinsville; Richard Bean of Louisville; Michael Hoseus of Lexington; Lorna Littrell of Henderson; Diana Lutz of Madisonville; and Cynthia Read of Louisville.
Each of the eight citizen members may cast one vote apiece on board decisions. The six members who will represent the two branches of KCTCS will cast one-half vote apiece.
The Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997, which Patton proposed and the General Assembly approved in May, established the KCTCS. The KCTCS Board of Regents will hold its next meeting at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Kentucky Tech-Central Campus in Lexington.
