Governor Awards Second Round of Grants for Substance Abuse Prevention Projects

Frankfort, Ky. - Nearly a million dollars in federal grants for youth substance abuse prevention were awarded today by Governor Paul Patton to nine communities in the Commonwealth under the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention Project. This is the second round of grants awarded under the program. Eleven communities received $1.4 million in grants for their prevention programs in October of 1998.

"These communities entered a very challenging competition offered by Kentucky Incentives for Prevention," Governor Patton said. "As with the first group of applicants, they were asked to submit proposals for prevention projects that are "science-based" and proven effective. With the addition of these communities today, The KIP Project will now be supporting prevention efforts in 20 communities across Kentucky, fourteen in Appalachian or rural counties and six in urban areas. These projects will apply the latest scientific research and use programs that have been proven most effective in preventing substance abuse."

The grant recipients first year amounts and the geographic target areas are: Challengers of Oldham County $103,975; Corbin Independent Schools (Laurel, Knox and Whitley Counties) $120,000; Henry County CARE Team $119,949; Gateway Prevention Coalition (Rowan County) $94,773; Boyle County Board of Education $89,440; Covington Independent Public Schools $125,195; Marion County Board of Education $103,350; Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Louisville $103,999; Mountain Regional Prevention Center (Pike and Floyd Counties) $103,999.

The grant awards are for three years of funding, but the programs will be reviewed each year for effectiveness to determine if they’ll receive continuation funds.
