Governor Patton Recommends Owsley County Project For ARC Funding

Frankfort, Ky. - Governor Paul Patton is recommending the Owsley County Action Team receive Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funding under Kentucky’s Fiscal Year 1999 ARC Investment Strategy.

The Action Team would receive $280,000 to purchase a building to house its leadership training program, if federal approval is given.

The ARC funding along with $70,000 of local money will be used to purchase a 22,200 square foot building complex with a large parking area in Boonville. The building complex contains the local public library and the Family Dollar store. Both tenants will remain in the complex and provide rental income to maintain the structure. The remaining space will be utilized by the Owsley County Action Team for office space to conduct job training programs. It will also provide meeting space for at least ten organizations already committed to regular use.

"I’m pleased to be able to recommend funding for this project that is vital to the future of Owsley County,." Governor Patton said. "The program provides leadership to enable the citizens of Owsley County to achieve self empowerment, sustainable community development and an enriched quality of life."

Full applications have been submitted to the Federal ARC Washington Office for approval.
