Governor Attending NGA, National
Education Goals Meetings; Governor Hosts DGA Dinner for President Clinton in
Washington, D.C.
Governor Paul Patton travels to Washington, D.C.,
Saturday, Feb. 26 through Tuesday, Feb. 29, to chair a meeting of the National
Education Goals Panel and host the Democratic Governors’ Association
Governor’s Dinner honoring President Clinton. The governor is also scheduled
to attend the National Governor’s Association Winter Meeting and to offer
testimony before the House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure
Aviation Subcommittee.
On Saturday, Feb. 26, Governor Patton will lead the
National Education Goals Panel Meeting from 9 a.m. until noon at the Holeman
Lounge on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club. Created in July
1990, the NEGP is a bipartisan body of federal and state officials made up of
eight governors, four members of Congress, four state legislators and two
members appointed by the President. Governor Patton is finishing a one-year term
as Chair of the NEGP.
Following the NEGP meeting at approximately 12:15 p.m.,
the governor will drop by a meeting of the Task Force on Information Technology
in Salon III, the Grand Ballroom of the J.W. Marriott at National Place. Chief
Information Officer of the Kentucky Governor’s Office of Technology Aldona
Valicenti will attend this meeting.
Governor Patton, in his role as Chairman of the DGA, will
then lead a press conference from 1:30 until 2 p.m. at the International Trade
Center, Ronald Reagan Building.
On Sunday, Feb. 27, from 8:50 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Governor
Patton and North Dakota Governor Ed Schaefer, Chair of the Republican Governor
Association, will participate in a live interview on C-Span’s “Sunday
Journal.”
Following the interview, the governor will join the
opening session of the NGA meeting from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in Salon III,
the Grand Ballroom at the J.W. Marriott. The opening session will feature
presentations on the global economy and technology expansion.
At 2:30 p.m. in Salon III at the J.W. Marriott, Governor
Patton will update the NGA’s Committee on Economic Development and Commerce on
the Federal Aviation Administration’s aviation improvement program
reauthorization. The committee will also discuss ways to improve citizens’
access to the Internet and other technology issues. This meeting will be
broadcast live on C-Span from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m.
Governor Patton will also attend a one-hour Appalachian Regional
Commission meeting at 4:30 in Salon I of the J.W. Marriott.
Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m., Governor and First Lady Judi
Patton will join other governors and spouses at the White House for a dinner
hosted by the President and First Lady. This event is closed to the media.
On Monday, Feb. 28, the governor and other NGA members
will attend to the White House for a 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. meeting with
President Clinton. This event is closed to the media.
Monday afternoon, Governor Patton will give a short
speech concerning adult literacy at an NGA meeting concerning postsecondary
education. The meeting will be held from 2:30 until 4 p.m. in Salon III, the
Grand Ballroom at the J.W. Marriott.
At 7 p.m., the Pattons will join the DGA General
Reception for the Governor’s Dinner honoring President Clinton in the Main
Hall at Union Station.
Governor Patton will host the DGA Governor’s Dinner at
8 p.m. at Union Station. Owensboro native Alma Randolph, who performed at both
Governor Patton’s Inaugurals, will sing at the dinner.
On Tuesday, Feb. 29, at 7 a.m., Governor Patton will
attend a Southern Governors’ Association meeting in Salon F, the Capitol
Ballroom at the J.W. Marriott.
Governor Patton will testify before the Aviation
Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on the
reauthorization of an FAA program that helps fund aviation construction and
improvement projects at 9:30 a.m. in Room 2167 of the Rayburn House Office
Building on Capitol Hill.
From 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Governor Patton will join
other members of the NGA for the first official meeting of the U.S.
Senate and the nation’s governors in the Russell Caucus Room, SR 235 of
the Russell Senate Office Building.
Immediately following the meeting the governor will
participate in a press conference with members of the Senate and the DGA.
