Special for the city of Springfield and Washington County

Frankfort, Ky. (July 27, 2001) – Gov. Paul Patton announced today that the city of Springfield is the recipient of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds in the amount of $500,000 to provide water and wastewater collection service to the site of a proposed 190,000 square foot manufacturing facility.

The Department for Local Government (DLG) administers the CDBG program in Kentucky.

Akebono Corporation, a large Japanese-owned automotive brake pads manufacturer, has agreed to locate in the Clearview Commerce Industrial Park, north of Springfield. The company will create 75 new manufacturing jobs.

CDBG funds will be used to construct about 4,800 linear feet of 12-inch water line; 6,800 linear feet of eight- and 10-inch sewer line; and a sewer pump station. The project also calls for the construction of a 500,000-gallon water storage tank that will provide fire suppression for the facility.

Patton said, “It’s always exciting to bring new business and industry to Kentucky. We are pleased to invest CDBG funds into infrastructure for this industry that will provide many jobs for Kentuckians.”

DLG Commissioner Jody Lassiter said, “Any day that we can partner with a community to bring jobs to the state is a great day.”

These funds are made available by DLG through the U.S. Department for Housing and Urban Development. DLG administers the CDBG Small Cities program in Kentucky, which makes funding available to eligible cities and counties for community development activities.
