The Governor’s Tribute to Freedom
A public remembrance of the heroes of 9/11 and a celebration of freedom

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Over 2,000 Kentuckians gathered at Frankfort’s Farham Dudgeon Civic Center today to pay tribute to the victims, survivors and rescue workers of the September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks, as part of The Governor’s Tribute to Freedom.

“We’ve come here today to remember, to reflect and to rejoice in the great legacy our forefathers gave us,” said Governor Patton.  “A legacy that endowed us with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  A legacy that September 11th has reminded us cannot and must not be taken for granted.”

The hour long tribute featured performances by Heather French Henry, the Army National Guard Band, the First Christian Church Bell Choir, the Kentucky State University Concert Choir, the Kentucky State Police Honor Guard and a nine minute, eleven second play depicting a collage of Kentucky remembrances about the tragic event.

More details, including photos, are available at http://gov.state.ky.us/freedom/.

It’s now our turn to assume the role of defenders of liberty and to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors to ensure the legacy of freedom is nurtured and preserved for the generations that follow.  Our nation’s destiny and the world’s destiny lies not in ceremonies such as the one we are participating in today. It lies in the everyday acts of everyday individuals to preserve the four tenets of freedom.  The freedom of speech…the freedom to worship…the freedom from want…and the freedom from fear.  Our struggle will not be over until every child, every woman, and every man living on the earth is able to hear the ring of freedom from every mountainside, hilltop, valley and plain.

Governor Paul E. Patton
