Gov.
Patton appoints Sec. Latta as Acting Ky. Parks Commissioner
FRANKFORT,
Ky. - Governor Paul Patton today appointed Tourism Sec. Ann Latta as Acting
Kentucky Parks Commissioner. Latta’s appointment is a result of the death of
Kenny Rapier who was commissioner since 1997.
“Nobody
could replace Kenny Rapier,” Patton said. “However, Sec. Latta’s
first-hand knowledge of our park system and devotion to the state’s tourism
industry will allow for a smooth transition during the remainder of the busy
travel season.”
Latta
was named Tourism Secretary back in 1995 when Patton first took office. She said
she is honored to be named acting commissioner.
“First
of all, Kenny’s outstanding leadership will be missed,” Latta said. “We
are, however, fortunate to have a host of outstanding career employees who can
carry on his legacy and keep Kentucky’s state parks the nation’s finest.”
The
Kentucky State Park System is composed of 50 state parks plus an interstate park
shared with Virginia. The Department of Parks operates 17 resort parks with
lodges -- more than any other state.
During
the administration of Gov. Patton, two lodges have been built and all 15 others
have been renovated. Each year, Kentucky parks draw 7.6 million visitors and
contribute $289 million to the economy. For more information on Kentucky parks,
