Gov.
Patton issues “Enhancement” funds to help communities
FRANKFORT,
Ky. - Governor Paul Patton today announced more than $11 million for 60 Federal
Transportation Enhancement grants aimed at providing funds for non-traditional
transportation projects that enhance the state’s roadsides.
“Our
highways not only provide our citizens with a safe method of transportation, but
they are also a part of the landscape of our communities,” Patton said. “The
Transportation Enhancement Funds provide us with a method of enhancing the
beauty of our roadsides and our state.”
The
Transportation Cabinet, in connection with the Federal Highway Administration,
administers the TEA-21 program and has provided more than $94 million to
approximately 280 enhancement projects. Some of the funding goes to support
Renaissance Kentucky communities.
The
funding will support projects like the Newport Riverfront in Campbell County
that will become handicapped accessible and have new benches and landscaping. Or
the Battle of Richmond project in Madison County where 62 acres of battlefield
land will be purchased and a 19th Century brick house will be
restored.
