204 Kentucky Teachers Receive National Certification

(Frankfort, Ky.) – Two hundred and four Kentucky teachers successfully completed the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification process during the 2001-02 school year.  NBPTS certification is a year-long, voluntary, performance-based assessment that signifies a teacher has met challenging professional teaching standards.  With the addition of these 204 teachers, Kentucky now has a total of 349 NBPTS-certified teachers.  According to NBPTS, Kentucky was one of the top 10 performing states in percentage pass rate across the nation.

The NBPTS certification process involves the production of a portfolio, videotaped classroom lessons, and a day-long written assessment.  Content proficiency as well as instructional competency must both be demonstrated.

Via legislation passed by the 2000 General Assembly, the NBPTS-certified teachers are eligible for a $2,000 annual salary supplement and a 75 percent reimbursement of their application fee.  They also may be awarded Rank I certification by the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB).

A complete listing of Kentucky’s new nationally certified teachers is attached.  Please direct all inquiries regarding this report to Mary Ellen W. Horner, Director, Division of Legislative and Public Relations, at the EPSB.  For additional information, please see the NBPTS web site at www.nbpts.org.
